You see Juan Soto over 1.5 total bases at -130. You check his season average — 1.8 total bases per game. Looks like easy value on the over.
You just ignored the only thing that actually matters: tonight's starting pitcher.
You're not betting on whether Soto gets 2 total bases. You're betting on whether the market priced 1.5 correctly given tonight's specific matchup.
Batter props in baseball are fundamentally different from basketball props. In the NBA, a star touches the ball 80+ times per game — his production is relatively stable. In MLB, a batter gets 3-5 plate appearances against a specific pitcher, in a specific park, with specific weather. Every variable matters more because the sample is so small on any given night.
That small sample size is also where the edge lives. The market can't perfectly price every batter-pitcher matchup across a full MLB slate. Your job is to find where it's wrong.
The Matchup Is Everything
wOBA: The Stat That Drives Batter Props
Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA) is the single best stat for projecting batter production. It weights every plate appearance outcome — walks, singles, doubles, triples, home runs — by their actual run value. A home run is worth more than a single, and wOBA reflects that.
Why wOBA matters for props: It tells you how productive a batter is per plate appearance, weighted by quality of contact. A batter with a .380 wOBA is producing at an elite level. A batter with a .290 wOBA is below average. That gap translates directly to hits, total bases, and H+R+RBI projections.
Matchup wOBA: Batter vs. Tonight's Starter
Season wOBA is a starting point. But tonight's starter changes everything.
What pros calculate: A matchup-adjusted wOBA that factors in the batter's performance splits against the pitcher's handedness, pitch mix, and style.
Juan Soto (LHB) vs. tonight's RHP starter:
Soto's season wOBA: .390
Soto's wOBA vs. RHP: .410
Tonight's pitcher allows .330 wOBA to LHB
Matchup wOBA: Blended projection accounting for both sides = .368
That .368 drives tonight's hit, total bases, and H+R+RBI projections — not his season .390.
Why this matters: A lefty batter facing a soft-tossing lefty pitcher with a good changeup is a completely different bet than the same batter facing a hard-throwing righty. The season average treats both identically. The matchup wOBA doesn't.
Handedness Splits
Handedness is the biggest single factor in batter-pitcher matchups. Most batters have significant platoon splits — they hit righties and lefties at very different rates.
Check both sides:
- Batter's wOBA/AVG/SLG vs. RHP and vs. LHP separately
- Pitcher's wOBA/AVG/SLG allowed to RHB and LHB separately
- A batter who crushes righties (.420 wOBA) but struggles against lefties (.290 wOBA) is two completely different bets depending on tonight's starter
Breaking Down Each Batter Prop
Hits Props
What drives hits: Contact ability against tonight's pitcher. A batter who makes contact doesn't need power — singles count. High contact rate + favorable matchup = hit upside.
Key metrics:
- Batting average vs. handedness — the most direct predictor of hit probability
- Contact rate vs. pitch type — does this batter put the ball in play against this pitcher's arsenal?
- BABIP (batting average on balls in play) — is the batter running hot or cold on balls in play? League average is ~.300. A batter at .350 BABIP is due for regression. A batter at .250 might be due to bounce back.
The edge: A batter facing a pitcher whose pitch mix he handles well (high contact rate against sliders, for example) has a higher hit probability than his season average suggests — especially if the market is pricing off the season number.
Total Bases Props
What drives total bases: Power + contact. Total bases rewards extra-base hits — a double is worth 2, a triple 3, a home run 4. Batters with power in favorable parks against hittable pitchers are the best total bases bets.
Key metrics:
- Slugging percentage vs. handedness — measures power output per at-bat
- Barrel rate — percentage of batted balls hit at optimal launch angle and exit velocity. High barrel rate = extra-base hit upside.
- Matchup SLG — how does this batter slug against this type of pitcher?
Park factor matters more here than any other prop. A batter with a .450 SLG in a hitter-friendly park with wind blowing out is a different bet than the same batter in a pitcher's park with wind blowing in.
Home Run Props
What drives home runs: Power, park, and pitcher vulnerability. Home runs are rare events — even elite power hitters only homer in 5-7% of plate appearances. That makes the pricing extremely sensitive to small probability changes.
Key metrics:
- HR/PA rate vs. handedness — how often does he homer against this type of pitcher?
- Barrel rate + exit velocity — the batted ball data that predicts HR probability
- Pitcher HR rate allowed — some pitchers give up fly balls that carry. Others keep the ball on the ground.
- Park + weather — wind blowing out at Wrigley is a fundamentally different HR environment than Oracle Park on a cold night
The edge: HR props are the most volatile batter prop. The market can misprice them significantly because small probability shifts create large odds changes. A batter who homers 6% of the time vs. 4% of the time is the difference between +450 and +700 odds.
H+R+RBI Props (Hits + Runs + RBI)
This is a composite prop — and each component has a different driver.
Hits: Driven by contact ability vs. tonight's pitcher (covered above).
Runs: Driven by teammate OBP, not the batter himself. A batter can only score a run if he gets on base AND the batters behind him drive him in. Runs are a team-dependent stat. A leadoff hitter with a .350 OBP scores more runs if his 2-3-4 hitters are mashing than if they're slumping.
RBI: Driven by runners on base context. A batter hitting 4th with runners on base in front of him has more RBI opportunities than a batter hitting 9th with nobody on. Lineup position and team run environment matter enormously.
Batter A: Leadoff hitter, great contact, fast team behind him
Proj: 1.3 hits + 0.9 runs + 0.5 RBI = 2.7 H+R+RBI
Batter B: Cleanup hitter, power bat, runners always on base
Proj: 0.9 hits + 0.7 runs + 1.1 RBI = 2.7 H+R+RBI
Same total, completely different composition. The model needs to project each component separately — not just average the composite.

Park Factors for Batters
Park effects on batters are more dramatic than on pitchers. The same batter has a fundamentally different projection at Coors Field vs. Oracle Park.
Hitter-friendly parks (factor >100): More hits, more extra-base hits, more total bases. Coors Field is the extreme, but Yankee Stadium, Great American Ball Park, and Fenway all boost batter production.
Pitcher-friendly parks (factor <100): Fewer hits, less power, lower total bases. Oracle Park, Dodger Stadium (for lefties), and T-Mobile Park suppress batter output.
How to use: A 5-8% park factor adjustment on a 1.5 total bases projection is ±0.10-0.12 total bases. Sounds small — but at a line of 1.5, that's the difference between projecting 1.38 (lean under) and 1.62 (lean over).
Weather — Wind Direction Is King
For batter props, wind direction matters more than any other weather variable.
Wind blowing OUT: Fly balls carry farther. More home runs, more extra-base hits, more total bases. This is the biggest single-game weather adjustment for batter props.
Wind blowing IN: Fly balls die at the warning track. Fewer home runs, fewer extra-base hits. Contact hitters are less affected than power hitters.
Temperature: Hot weather = ball carries farther = slight boost to power numbers. Cold weather = less carry = suppresses power.
The combination matters: A power hitter at Wrigley with wind blowing out on a 90-degree day is a completely different bet than the same hitter at the same park with wind blowing in on a 55-degree night.
Lineup Position and Context
Plate Appearances
A batter hitting leadoff gets 4-5 plate appearances per game. A batter hitting 8th might get 3-4. That difference — one extra PA — changes every projection.
Check the lineup before betting. If a batter usually hits 2nd but tonight he's hitting 7th, his PA projection drops and every prop projection drops with it.
Run Environment
For runs projections: Who's hitting behind this batter? A leadoff hitter's run total depends on the 2-3-4 hitters driving him in. If those guys are slumping, his run projection drops even if he's getting on base at a high rate.
For RBI projections: Who's hitting in front of this batter? A cleanup hitter's RBI total depends on runners being on base when he comes up. Team OBP in the lineup spots ahead of him is the key variable.
Game total: The Vegas game total (over/under on total runs) is a quick proxy for run environment. A game with a total of 9.5 produces more runs and RBI than a game with a total of 6.5. Adjust batter props accordingly.
How the Pitcher's Arsenal Affects Batters
Just like K props depend on how a lineup handles the pitcher's pitch mix, batter props depend on how THIS batter handles THIS pitcher's arsenal.
What to look for:
- Batter whiff rate vs. pitch type. If a batter has a 35% whiff rate against sliders and tonight's pitcher throws 40% sliders, he's going to struggle. Fewer hits, fewer total bases.
- Batter performance vs. velocity. Some batters crush 95+ mph fastballs. Others can't catch up. If tonight's pitcher throws 97, that's a different bet than facing a soft-tosser at 89.
- Pitch mix matchup. A batter who feasts on fastballs but can't touch changeups is a great bet against a fastball-heavy pitcher and a terrible bet against a changeup-heavy pitcher. Season averages blend these together — you need to separate them.
Intel Check
Same principle as K props — before betting, make sure the market doesn't know something you don't.
Check for:
- Lineup card. Is your batter actually in the lineup? Is he in his usual spot? Late scratches and lineup shuffles happen daily in MLB.
- Batter health. Nagging injury? Came out of yesterday's game early? Trainer visit? These don't always make the injury report but they move lines.
- Pitcher changes. The scheduled starter got scratched and a bullpen game is happening instead. Your entire batter projection is different against a parade of relievers vs. one starter.
- Line movement. If a batter's total bases line dropped from 1.5 to 1.5 but the odds shifted from -120 to -155, the market is telling you something. Respect it.
The rule: If the line moved sharply and you don't know why, find out before betting against it.
The Full Process
- Check recent market prices. What has this batter's line been? Has it moved? Why?
- Identify tonight's starter. Calculate matchup wOBA based on batter vs. pitcher handedness, pitch mix, and style.
- Check the lineup. Where is the batter hitting? How many PAs will he get? Who's around him in the order?
- Apply park and weather. Park factor for hits/TB/HR. Wind direction for power props. Temperature adjustment.
- Project each component. Hits from contact/matchup. Total bases from power/park. Runs from teammate OBP. RBI from runners on base context.
- Check intel. Lineup confirmed? Batter healthy? Pitcher still starting? Any sharp line movement?
- Compare to the market. Is your projection meaningfully different from the book's line? Bet the gap if it's real. Pass if it's noise.

Mistake #1: Ignoring the Starting Pitcher
The error: "He's averaging 1.8 total bases, line is 1.5, bet the over."
Why it fails: Tonight's starter is a lefty with a nasty slider and your batter is a lefty who can't hit lefties. His matchup projection is 1.1 total bases, not 1.8.
The fix: Always check handedness splits and matchup wOBA before betting any batter prop.
Mistake #2: Ignoring Park and Weather
The error: Same projection at Coors and Oracle Park.
Why it fails: Park factors create 5-10% swings. Wind direction adds another 3-8% on power props. Combined, that's significant.
The fix: Check park factor and wind direction every single game. Especially for total bases and HR props.
Mistake #3: Treating H+R+RBI as One Stat
The error: "He averages 2.8 H+R+RBI, line is 2.5, over looks good."
Why it fails: His runs depend on teammates getting on base. His RBI depends on runners being on base when he bats. If the top of the order is slumping, his runs and RBI both drop even if his hitting is fine.
The fix: Project each component separately. Hits from matchup. Runs from lineup context. RBI from runners on base context.
Mistake #4: Betting Before the Lineup Posts
The error: Betting a batter prop at 2pm when lineups don't post until 4-5pm.
Why it fails: Your batter might not be in the lineup. Or he might be moved from 2nd to 7th. Or the opposing starter got scratched. Everything changes.
The fix: Wait for lineups. The best batter prop bets appear in the final 1-2 hours before first pitch.
Mistake #5: Chasing Yesterday's Box Score
The error: Batter went 3-for-4 with a homer last night. You bet his over tonight.
Why it fails: Last night he faced a 5.50 ERA righty who threw 60% fastballs. Tonight he faces a 2.80 ERA lefty with a wipeout slider. Completely different matchup.
The fix: Project tonight's specific matchup. Yesterday's box score is noise.
